Stella Maris is a low and high residential aged care community located on the shore of Cronulla Bay with panoramic views from Cape Solander in the north to the Royal National Park in the south.
The community was built on the Sisters of Mercy culture of care and warmth, which is supported by the local participation of many volunteers and families. Today, the community draws on this heritage and is directed and supported by the professionalism of Catholic Healthcare.
Stella Maris has 55 beds on two floors with an elevator, ramp and stairs to connect them. There are 52 single rooms with ensuite bathrooms and one three-bed room in the nursing home section. Half of the rooms face the ocean and the remainder face internal courtyards and beautiful gardens.
The physiotherapy department has a state of the art walking machine, parallel rails, massage table and passive exercise accessories. There is a cinema and activity centre that has capacity for more than 120 people for functions such as the bush Christmas, concerts and ballroom dancing exhibitions.
A day centre operates Monday-Saturday to allow applicants waiting for a permanent bed to attend Stella Maris on a daily basis. This helps them to build relationships with the staff and residents so that the transition from home to residential care is much easier.
Staff are dedicated to providing quality care in an atmosphere of homeliness and dignity, with personal regard for each individual.
Staff strive to enhance the quality of life for the sick and the aged, alleviate suffering and provide care in an environment which is distinctly Christian, respecting and empowering the elderly.
Stella Maris is supported by more than 185 volunteers who assist residents and staff with many worthwhile projects.
Stella Maris is accredited by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency. Stella Maris was recommended for two Better Practice Awards in the latest Commonwealth Accreditation Survey in July 2006.
History
Stella Maris was established in 1922 as a restorative home, from the heart of the Sisters of Mercy monastery in Parramatta. From 1922 to 1964 it was used as a local school where the Sisters of Mercy taught. In 1965, it was redeveloped as a nursing home and in 1987 it took to its present form.
With a tradition of quality service in the Shire since 1922, the new building (commissioned in 1987) is certified to comply with the 2008 requirements.
Stella Maris is owned by the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta. Catholic Healthcare became the approved provider for Stella Maris on 1 February 2004, commencing a period of shared ministry.
Transport
Stella Maris is a five-minute walk from Cronulla rail station by walking along the shore using the Esplanade. It is a three-minute taxi ride or a short trip on the South Cronulla bus. On-street parking is available at most times during the day.
