Hawkesbury District Health Service (HDHS) is a 127-bed private hospital that provides public health services with the Sydney West Area Health Service. HDHS is nestled at the foot of the Blue Mountains in historic Windsor, approximately 40 kilometres from Sydney's central business district.

HDHS' vision is to provide professional, innovative care for a healthier community. HDHS celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2006.

HDHS takes a holistic approach to healthcare by providing an integrated range of hospital and community services in accordance with identified needs and available resources. Services are based on the Christian values of mercy, compassion, justice, equality and respect. The HDHS model combines the best features of public and private models.

The majority of services are based at Windsor, although some services are provided in centres at Richmond and in local schools.

After hours GP clinic

HDHS, in collaboration with the Hawkesbury Division of General Practice, operates an after hours GP clinic within the Community Health Centre. No appointments are necessary and the clinic bulk bills.

Community Board of Advice

HDHS has a very active Community Board of Advice. The board forges a strong link between HDHS and the community, ensuring community participation in the provision of health services. The board also represents community interests to the management of HDHS, therefore bringing unique expertise and links with the local Hawkesbury community.

Volunteers at HDHS

Through the support and dedication of many volunteers, HDHS is able to provide additional services and equipment for the comfort and care of patients, visitors and families. The United Hospital Auxiliary volunteers also manage a gift shop within HDHS.

History of HDHS

The HDHS building was commissioned in early August 1996. In September, the building was officially opened by the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, and blessed by Bishop Bede Heather, Bishop of Parramatta.

The Founding sponsors were the Sisters of Charity, the Sisters of St Joseph, the Sisters of Mercy (Singleton), the Little Company of Mary, the St John of God Sisters and the St John of God Brothers.
